Western Mass Pioneers in Search of
New Head Coach
Joe Calabrese and the Pioneers
part ways
After
one season, the Western Mass Pioneers and first year coach Joe Calabrese part
ways. Coach Calabrese’s experience and
dedication to putting a winning product on the field will be missed.
“We were unable to come to terms on a
contract for the 2012 season. It is
always an unpleasant situation when we cannot come to terms as we have had 2
different coaches over the last 2 seasons. ” stated Lusitano Club President
Celso Correia. The PDL is a
developmental league and consistency is what is needed to succeed. “Endicott College has hired the correct coach
as Joe Calabrese’s commitment to take a team to the next level goes without
question. Now Joe can focus on a less
strenuous travel schedule and be closer to home,” continued Correia.
Under Coach Calabrese, the Pioneers
finished the 2011 campaign with a 6-5-5 record missing the playoffs by a single
victory. A US Open Cup berth and being
in 1st place or tied for 1st in the Northeast division
for the first half of the season were two notable highlights.
Coach Calabrese’s primary focus will be
leading the Endicott College Men’s soccer program to a second consecutive ECAC
tournament berth in 2012. In the 2011
season, Coach Cal brought the Gulls to a first ever ECAC Division 3 playoff
appearance. The Gulls finished the
regular season with an 8-7-3 record.
“We wish Joe Calabrese the best of luck
with his coaching career. Coach Cal has
been successful in all of his coaching roles and I am sure it will continue,”
commented Board of Directors Chairman Steve Scott.
The Western Mass Pioneers are reviewing
applications and will have a decision in the very near future. Tryouts will be held at early January at a
location to be named. Continue to refer
